This Christmas

This Christmas..

Every December, my family and I get ready for Christmas. We put up lights, decorations and the tree. My family and I all make our own ornaments each year and it goes up on the tree. I’ve been deciding exactly what will my ornament look like this year. Last year, it was a big red ball, and my name in big silver glittered letters. This year I want to make it look special. Different. So it’s still a work in progress.

As soon as Thanksgiving is done, we play our Christmas music real loud. The kids join my sister and I as we decorate the house to give it that special Christmasy feeling. It’s a family thing indeed. We all put up lights and argue about which set of lights go where and where did the extra light bulbs go? Or why are the kids playing with the Garland like they’re fur coats? And who’s going on the roof this time to put up Santa Claus and the reindeers? Or what will be making for the Christmas dinner and whose house should be this year? And what will I get for everyone this year? It’s the same thing every year, and usually the same people who get picked to go up on the roof. I always make sure it isn’t me. lol

Buying the gifts each year gets harder and harder. You want to get something for someone that will be special and making sure they don’t have it already is pretty tricky too. What I get for my mother each year: a bottle of white wine and a bottle of Vodka with a six pack of Monster. haha It works every year! She’s easy to get a gift for. It’s my sister who’s pretty tricky. She likes jewelry. And that’s all fine and dandy, but picking out jewelry is a hassle for me. I’m not really into the bling, so picking it out for someone who is just gives me a headache. But each year it seems I got it right, so this year I’m on the prowl at the jewelry stores again. My brother in law is easy. I shop online for him. He’s a gamer like me, so I’ll get the latest games out there for him….and for myself. lol I remember when I was a kid and opening my gifts. Like when I got my first skateboard. I taught myself how to keep my balance, and how to turn a certain way, and this and that with it. It was awesome. I remember when I was 11 and I got my first walkman. How long ago that seemed. *smiles* When I unwrapped the box the walkman was in, all I wanted was to go walking all over the neighborhood because I had a walkman, and most of my friends didn’t. I was the coolest *laughs*. As for the kids, easy! Clothes and toys. Lots of them. Then I’m broke and working double shifts lol. But it’s all worth it once I see the look on their faces when they open their gifts. That look..where they see something that they’ve wanted for sometime, or somthing that means it’s special to them. Yea, that look. It’s priceless!

Growing up, Christmas was the best part of the year. And it still is. Because no matter what, you can have all the money in the world, or not have much, but having your family and friends there with you, makes it all the more special. It’s the time of the year when you’re surrounded with the people you love, and it’s all love, it’s all family..there’s nothing better than that. When your home is filled with laughter, love and tears of joy, when all the kids are playing with one another, when old and young folks are together remembering the old days before, and good times to come..that is Christmas.

I was born and raised in a Seventh Day Adventist church so we don’t do Christmas. But the spirit of giving we believe. Although a lot of members in my church will not have a Christmas tree, I tell you that I will. Every year it will be in my living room, with lights and ornaments and my doors covered with glitter and stockings and a wreath where you can grab chocolate from. Underneath the tree will be presents, and a table next to it with a plate of cookies and a glass of milk with a letter to Santa. It has been like that all of my life, and for as long as I live, it will continue to be like that. This Christmas as every other year and all the years to come, I will be with my dear ones enjoying the holidays.

But this Christmas will seem a bit different for a lot of us. We will be remembering a lot of those who are no longer with us. But I pray that for those who have lost a loved one, remember that this time of the year, they will be with us singing Christmas songs. This Christmas, it is dedicated to them. They will never be forgotten and will always remain in our hearts.

This Christmas, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I hope that you and your loved ones will have all the love and happiness that your whole heart and hand can hold. This Christmas, from my family to yours..I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

“So this is christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young a very merry christmas
And a happy new year”
