One Samoana wouldn’t be the village it is without our beautiful natives. Kicking off our series of ‘get to know us’ posts is an interview with our very own Hanalei Faoa, a.k.a. Pyro a.k.a. Diamond Cuts from Leone, Amerika Samoa. (Round of applause, please!)
How did you find One Samoana?
I actually got an email from Maosi [miss that guy!]. I had once told him how much I love his writings. He sent me the link to the village and told me to read more of his writings here. I’ve been here since then.
What’s the funniest/craziest thing you ever witnessed/did in the village?
Witnessed: I’ve seen a lot of crazy things in the ville. I think the one I would have to go with is meeting Grey and him posting up his crazy links. LOL I’m not saying I’ve gone on them, but I know some people have and they come back telling the rest of us on about it. If Grey gives you a link, don’t go on there. He may be my bestie, but still..even I won’t click on that link. haha
What’s an experience you had that made you SO proud to be Samoan?
i was in cook islands last year wen the tsunami hit. it was hard to be so far away from home, wen all u wanted to was to be home. team samoa came to our village, and we prayed, ate, sang, prayed some together. it was so powerful. team am. samoa went to the village that was hosting them and we did the same. am. samoa and samoa usually dont get along, im not sure why. but during that time, being together was wat mattered. i never more proud that time to be a samoan than any other time. because we are loving people. we are humble. no matter wat happens, we’re always there for each other, no matter wat differences we have towards each other.
Tell us about your passion/hobby/work
I work for the American Samoa National Olympic Committee [ASNOC]. I first started working there summers in high school when I was a Junior [11th grade]. Then started working there in 2003. In 2005 I went with the Swimming Association in helping them build their association, data bases and such. I also became a member of the board for that association. In 2008, I went back to ASNOC after completing the goals made for the swimming association. I plan at the beginning of next year to finish my classes for Sports Management. I will take classes in Melbourne, Australia, then in Lausanne, Switzerland, and then the Colorado, United States. I’m excited about the path that my job is taking me. I love every moment I’ve had with it, and will have with it. Ive been to almost all of the Pacific Islands, and I have to say my favorite is Fiji. I’ll be moving away from home the ending of this year, but am lucky because I’ll be taking classes, and finally will have a chance to be with the United States Olympic Committee. I’ve had my eye on that job for awhile now. Life is good, God is great! My passion? Oh man..so many. haha I’ll just name a few. Chilling with family and friends, music..just living my life to fullest and loving every minute of it.
Whats a project you’re working on that you want everybody to know about?
I call it the treasure chest. lol But Ive recently been going through my grandfather’s journals [there are alot of them], and he notes the people that come in and out of his life, most stay. But he names them all. He talks about legends, and stories he was told when he was child. He talks about how he met my grandmother and their first child, to the last one he had. There are about 8 books in all. I wanted to go through it all and turn it into a book. I want everyone to read it and see from his eyes, how he had so little in his life, and ended up with so much. how he affected our lives, everyones lives he met. thats why im calling it the treasure chest. haha
Your final thoughts and shout outs:
I was once told that we were all put here for a reason. I’m not too sure what my reason, or my purpose is but I can tell that I’m going to make as many mistakes as I can, be unsure so many times so that when it comes down to really knowing, understanding my reason, I will have no doubts.
Shout outs. first of all..always my burrito man! haha
